‘The question as to what art is, is relatively simple. An artist makes it. The question of - who is an artist- is self-acclaimed in first instance, yet it is society that must accept him or her by buying his or her work. It is therefore the most beautiful democratic mechanism that makes art prevail and ensures the signatures of its contemporaries in every work of art being made. That is Art. Society deserves the art it is presented with and reflects the era in which it was made. We can hardly be proud of what the last three decades have provided us with.
I had always thought of artists being autonomous, placed outside the rules and regulations of the community and being rather a stick in the mud by pointing the finger at society’s inadequacies. Alas, that is not true, society as a whole does not accept criticism but at the same time its ignorance does leave enough space to hold up the mirror and reflect the impact it has on the artist work. That is the niche where culture is made to survive in the modern world of today.’
